Extraordinary Tactics Successful Entrepreneurs Employ!
Last month’s Business Insight issue 1 debated whether entrepreneurs are born or made, suggesting the world of entrepreneurship embraces many diverse visions and opinions, not to mention opportunities. Whilst it's helpful to know that you can be an entrepreneur with the right support, knowing how to make your dream a reality is anything but easy!
Consequently, one key question every entrepreneur starting or reinventing a business venture asks us is ...
Which type of business is right for me?
This month, Business Insight issue 2 explores 5 ways to become an entrepreneur, differentiating between the desire to create a job versus the desire to create a business. Both are equally valid ways to be an entrepreneur, and as you might expect, each has its own pros and cons! So, now that you have decided to be an entrepreneur and start your own business venture, or re-invent an existing business ...
What do you have in mind?
Will you set out to create a job for yourself as a one-person-band and satisfy your desire to work for yourself with minimal interference from others?
Or, will you join the "gig economy" working for other people, perhaps as a freelancer or contractor, concentrating your efforts on what you do best?
Perhaps you prefer to start out as a solo entrepreneur (solopreneur) with a view to growing into a bigger business at some point in the future when the time is right.
Or, you may aspire to create something bigger from the outset, following the same ethos as those who've gone before you being a "big company starting small" like Richard Branson!
Alternatively, you may have aspirations to GO BIG and buy an established business with employees and an active client base!
Whichever option you choose ...
… in our experience, it's important to have the end goal or long term plan in your sights from the start to help pull you towards your ultimate destination! No doubt you've heard the expression reportedly coined by Benjamin Franklin,
"If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!"
How many times can you recall having set out on a journey to reach a pre-defined destination, only to get lost on the way because you didn't plan your route beforehand?
You may even have planned to rely on your Satnav or Google Maps only to lose reception at a crucial moment, ending up right back where you started, or worse still, lost in the middle of nowhere!
Unsurprisingly, the same thing can happen in business when you fail to plan!
And the first step to creating a plan is to decide where you are heading!
So, which of these 5 possibilities, if any, will you choose?
You may prefer to work on your own, enjoying a simple lifestyle, content with earning enough to cover your living expenses.
Or, you may prefer to do what you enjoy doing most whilst being able to pick and choose when you work.
Alternatively …
You may prefer to start out deliberately small, testing the water and adapting your approach until you are confident enough you have found the right niche for you.
Then again ...
... you may have bigger aspirations, preferring to invest as much time and money as it takes to become a BIG company as quickly as possible!
On the other hand, you may even prefer to take ownership of an established business with good growth potential!
Whatever you decide ...
We know it is possible to create a very lucrative business from any of these starting points based on over 30 years of business experience, research and observation.
Provided that ...
You dare to dream big enough to create challenging audacious goals that are beyond your reach when you start out …
You prepare a suitably realistic and achievable plan to help guide you towards your ultimate goal …
You remain open-minded and vigilant enough to recognise when you need to add more steps to reach your chosen destination …
You stay wise enough to accept you may have to stop what you are doing and change direction sooner than you thought, and …
You seek professional help when needed to overcome challenges and alleviate any limitations you encounter along the way.
So, how can you reach new levels of success on your entrepreneurial journey?
